Day 4 even hotter today but no hills.

We used NCN66 to get out of York and stopped at Stamford Bridge for first lunch. Incredibly busy here with permanent traffic jam in town. Headed north through rolling fields of wheat to Malton for second lunch in a café, glad to get out of the sun. After this it was an easy ride over the fields to Helmsley but the heat coming up from the road was incredible, good to get indoors.

Day 5 back in to the hills.

A short day today so started with sight seeing at Helmsley Castle then Rievaulx Abbey.

After this we went north west through North York Moors up and down steep hills, plenty of climbing.

Sadly the café was shut at Hawnby so we just carried on up and down the hills, some very steep.

Arrived in Osmotherley where all the pubs were open, phew.

Day 6 heading for Swaledale.

Scorching hot today even when we left. We headed over to Kirkby Fleetham and stopped at a pub for tea and iced drinks, we needed to keep taking in fluid constantly. Next we went to Catterick, got there about twelve thirty but the café was already shut. Luckily we managed to buy food in the coop and sit under the trees for a picnic. The next section up through Hipswell shouldn't be too hard but with the temperature up to 32C by now we had to keep stopping when we found shade. It's a steady climb then suddenly you're at the top, a quick whizz downhill and we're in Swaledale and an ice cream shop in Reeth, cafés still shut for some reason. When the ice cream shop closed we headed down to Grinton and The Bridge Inn for a quick pint before heading up to the hostel.

Day 7 Dales and Moors.

Heavy rain overnight and plenty of thunder but all dry and sunny again by the time we set off. Temperature back down to 22C today thank goodness. We headed up Swaledale (the best of the dales) stopping at the museum in Reeth and then at a café in Gunnerside. It's been several days since we found a café that was open. We also stopped in Muker for an hour before tackling the big hill over to Kirkby Stephen. We met up that evening with our pal Bertie and his daughter Charlotte, great to see them both.
