Kirkby Stephen

Had a long lie in and a late start. First stop was the Wensleydale Creamery. Had a good look around, watched the cheese making demonstration then bought some cheese. Next stop was the Green Dragon and Hardraw Falls. So with 2 miles behind us and lunch time past we set off up the Buttertubs. Weather stayed dry and bright, much different to yesterday. Once we were in Swaledale we headed up hill along a road which was closed. Eventually reached Kirkby Stephen at about 6.

Langdon Beck

Woke to a lovely sunny day with broken cloud. Sally and Heather set off first to get a head start. Unfortunately some road workers sent them the wrong way at Rookby heading towards Heggerscales. We phoned them and got them to come back down so we could go up the road to Tan Hill where we had a pub lunch. After lunch we went down the NCN route to Bowes which starts as a rough track. Here Sally and Heather took the 'pink route' straight to Cotherstone. Trevor, Andy and I went to Barnard castle for shopping then took the B6277 to the hostel at Langdon Beck.

Alston

We got off to a nice early start and had reached the top of our first climb onto Ireshope Moor within the hour. It was a quick whizz down dodging the sheep to St John's Chapel and we then headed down Weardale. Nice and warm and sunny. At Eastgate Sally and Heather headed off to Rookhope for lunch, Andy, Trevor and I went to Stanhope for a BCQ. We met them again at Rookhope and then had a long steady climb up towards Allenheads. Tea and a cake in Allenheads then a hard ride over the moor took us to Alston.

Edmunbyers

It rained through the night and was much colder when we set off. The day started with a climb up the A686 but soon turned in to a long fast ride down to Haydon Bridge. We then used the B6319 and some back roads to reach a pub for lunch at Warden. A quick shopping session (sun very hot here) in Hexham then we started a long long climb up to Juniper, Slaley Forest and eventually to a tea room in Blanchland at 16:30. After tea and a cake we had a quick ride around Derwent Reservoir to the hostel at Edmunbyers.

Mileage 43 Ave 9.8 Max 33.0 Fri
